It is with great sadness that the East Riding of Yorkshire Lieutenancy received the news that HRH The Duke of Edinburgh passed away on 9 April 2021.
Our thoughts are with Her Majesty and the Royal Family as they grieve for the loss of their Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather.
The Duke served as The Queen's consort until retiring from public duty in 2017. He was a national figure who has been ever present throughout our lives and for whom we have a collective affection despite not knowing him personally.
Over the years, His Royal Highness has visited the area on a number of occasions, for example, in 1997, he visited the Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club at Bridlington and, together with Her Majesty, visited Kingston upon Hull in 1999 to celebrate the City's 700th Anniversary. I personally had the pleasure of showing him around the Smith and Nephew site during which he opened the newly-formed Global Business Unit. In 2002, he visited the East Riding of Yorkshire as part of Her Majesty's Golden Jubilee and The Duke was a frequent visit to Hull Trinity House. The Duke's last visit to the region was in 2009.
I have written to The Queen's Private Secretary asking that he pass on to Her Majesty the deepest sympathies from the residents of Hull and the East Riding at this sad time.
Our heartfelt sympathy to Her Majesty and Members of the Royal Family who have been deeply affected by the very sad loss of His Royal Highness, they will be in our thoughts and prayers.
